Random musings on objects of present fancy.
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
This was probably one of my favourite quotes from Shawshank Redemption. Or maybe this was the only quote I ever remembered.
I saw the movie Kandahar some time back and I now have a new favourite.
“Everyone needs a reason for living. Hope is that reason. For thirsty it is water, for hungry it is good, for lonely it is love , for a woman under full cover, hope is the day she will be seen.”
I recently went through a huge emotional change. I was building up my hopes on something so high that the thought of it coming crashing down didn’t even seem possible to me.
Turns out I was building a palace of cards completely ignoring the storm that was behind me the whole while just waiting for the right opportunity to give it a blow.
Sounds dramatic? Well, the effect on me was. Personally at least. I know a lot of people who are wise, matured and strong. I thought I was one of them but the last one year has disappointed me.
This came as a new year gift! I am not being sarcastic in calling it a gift. Disappointments are as important as victories. Someone once told me that I am not good at handling failures. Yes I wasn’t and now it is proven that I still am not.
But some failures teach you a big lesson. And believe it or not, no matter how short sighted you are as a person, there will come a time when you will look back at this and thank heavens that it happened.
After all, not all hopes are worth being nurtured. Definitely not at the cost of so many other good things that we ignore.
Which brings me to the original quote that I mentioned. It is very easy to talk about hope.
But how do we know what is worth hoping and what is not?
Just like we have dreams and aspirations which we categorise as optimistic, pessimistic and realistic ; we have something similar for hope.
Of course there is nothing called pessimistic hope. It won’t even be a hope. But we can call it a negative one, specially if we are hoping it for somebody else. Ex?? I hope she rots in hell!! We hear it a lot, don’t we?
But we can choose to have an optimistic hope or a realistic one.
Sometimes a quick reality check helps us know which one we personally are having.
It is very convenient to say ” one fine day, xyz or abc will happen”. Now this will be a realistic hope if you are working towards it or if the chances of accomplishing it depends more on you and less on fate or worse, on somebody else.
An optimistic or in some cases , foolish hope would be to depend on something totally unrelated to your own efforts and wait for it to happen.
As they say, we should happen to things rather than waiting for things to happen to us.
And if you currently have big hopes on yourself for something, it is time you gauge if it is realistic or just a foolishness!
In response to Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers for this week:
Seldom does the word “last” relate to happiness.
Today is the last day I can take a stroll in this lovely garden.
Today is the last day I can smell the beautiful roses.
Today is the last day I can stand at the center of this pretty little world of mine.
Today is the last day I can use colors to paint the void that otherwise exists here….
Ten years ago, I came to this Centre on charges of a grave crime,
Today is the last day of my solitary Confinement.
Today, I’m happy and I paint the life that I had lived for so long, one last time. It is my final goodbye!
I look up to the sky
and i see the shining stars,
It brings back memories of your twinkling eyes and I wonder..
Do we ever think of each other at the same time?
I look up to the sky
and I see the drifting clouds,
I remember the day we spent on top of a mountain; It brings back memories and I wonder..
Do we ever dream of each other at the same time?
I look up to the sky
and I see the different constellations,
It brings back memories of the nights we used to talk under the star lit sky and I wonder..
Do we ever speak of each other at the same time?
I look up to the sky
and I see the round bright beautiful moon,
Oh it brings back so much to my mind and I wonder..
Are we both looking at this moon now?
Needless to say, the title is derived from Somerset’s Maugham’s novel. And I had to relate to the moon and I have established this before that when I write, it is either a cheesy one or a depressing one!
So, this is an attempt at a depressing poem. I know it really isn’t much- but it is an honest attempt. hope you like it.
“Suffering has been stronger than all other teaching, and has taught me to understand what your heart used to be.
I have been bent and broken- but -I hope- into a better shape.”
We all go through tough times, times when we wonder if we can really get past this. But we eventually do. And invariably, when we look back, we find it quite amusing that a tiny rough patch like this could scare us! It wasn’t the problem that was tiny. The person that came out of the storm was bigger and better to now realize one’s true potential, one’s strength!
“A man is like a fraction whose numerator is what he is and whose denominator is what he thinks of himself.
The larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction.”
I’ve always liked people who are modest and humble, despite their genius or awesomeness- reason why Rajnikanth is practically worshipped in Tamil Nadu. No matter how successful one gets, being successful somehow seems easier than being successful and being humble. With fame and power, every human mind is bound to be power drunk. The strongest of people however are the ones who know where they came from and who helped him reach where he is today.
The quote however not just about modesty. It is good to have confidence and faith in oneself. There are people who have everything that a man should have to be great, except talent. But believing in your talent is the first step to achieve. However, self satisfied with something that is not there and not working towards constant improvising will get no good to anyone! Never over or under estimate yourself. Have faith and make progress towards the bigger goal of being a better one.
” A Snake which cannot cast its skin has to die.
As well the minds which are prevented from changing their opinions; they cease to be mind”
Life is all about constant change. Ideas which people believed in are now superstitions. With advancement in practically every field- science, maths, psychology and what not, ideas ,views and thoughts keep changing. It is quite essential to challenge your beliefs constantly and if found otherwise, change it. Maybe that’s why we have the power of communication. To discuss, to share and to help change. Too much gyaan!!
“A true friend is someone who sees the pain in your eyes, while everyone else believes your smile”
I don’t have any fancy story or explanation to this one. I am someone who treasures their friends a lot, even more than my family probably. To me, these handful of people mean the world and anything wrong in my life, I can openly share it with them at any hour of the day. Where I am today, all preachy and confident, I guess it is because these people have supported me through the toughest times. I guess we all some very close friends with whom we can be ourself- we never fake it or we never can even if we wanted to! Cheers to these angels in my life 🙂
“We are not the same Persons this year as last; nor are those we love.
It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person.”
-W. Somerset Maugham
These lines are so profound. I must admit, that I started reading Maugham’s “Of Human Bondage”, because I was really impressed with this man’s profoundness. I won’t say love doesn’t exist or it is pointless to love anyone. But I guess the kind of expectations we have of one another is silly. We may love someone whole heartedly at some point, but sooner, we change, our priorities change. And even if we continue to feel deeply for the other person, it may not be the same as before. If we look closely, it probably will be the case with oneself too. This is no reason to cease to love though.
Love realistically maybe..
“Be crazy, Be stupid, Be Silly, Be Weird, Be Whatever.
Because Life is too short to be anything but Happy!”
Don’t let anything stereotype you or your world. Some things ought to go wrong. Live it your way- eve if it is silly. As long as it makes you happy, you’re going the right way!
